US LCI (L) Landing Craft Level Crossings Morton & Clayton" designThe US Navy employed LCI (L) Landing Craft, large amphibious assault ships, to land large numbers of infantry directly onto beaches. Effectively they were a small steel ship that could land 200 troops, travelling from rear bases on its own at a speed of up to 15 knots. Over 900 were built starting in 1943 and used extensively in operations in both the Pacific and European theatres. Some were converted into heavily armed beach assault support ships.
